Buying the right firewood doesn’t have to be a complicated process. It all comes down to a few simple tips and the knowledge that “you get what you pay for”.

The first thing you need to know is where you’re going to store your firewood. You should be able to store your firewood someplace dry. It doesn’t have to be fancy, but it has to be off the wet ground and out of the rain– wet wood is hard to burn and wasteful besides.

If you have enough storage space, you may choose to buy unseasoned or ‘green’ wood and let it dry for a year or so before you burn it. Green wood is cheaper, but it is unsuitable for burning until it has dried or ‘seasoned’ a year or more.

If you have limited storage space, you will need to buy seasoned firewood. Firewood is typically sold in measures called ‘cords’, which measure 4’x4’x8’. If a full cord is too much, you can get them in half or quarter cord measures as well.

Firewood is sold by volume, but not all firewoods are created equal. The denser the wood, the slower it burns, and hence the more heating you get for your dollar. Therefore, favor hardwoods over softwoods like pine, which will burn quickly, forcing you to tend the fire more often.

Finally, be sure to clarify how the firewood will be delivered. If the firewood company can dump it in a pile on your driveway, you’ll get a better deal than if it comes shrink-wrapped on a pallet — but you’ll have to stack and clean up after it yourself.
